The Divinity of Jesus Christ:
Overview
Question: Does the New Testament identify Jesus as God?
--------------------------------------------------
Overview
The divinity of Jesus is established in the New Testament by Jesus claiming divine attributes and divine authority. In addition to this, the New Testament authors apply to Jesus the exclusive titles and descriptions of God from the Old Testament. It should be noted that although Jesus is God, Jesus is not the Father and Jesus is not the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the Second Person of the Triune God: Father, Son (Jesus) and Holy Spirit.
The following is an overview of Jesus being identified as God in the New Testament.
-
The Lord of the Sabbath: The Old Testament says that God is the Lord of the Sabbath (Genesis 2:2-3, Exodus 20:8-11, 31:12-17 & Leviticus 23:1-3). The New Testament says that Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:1-8, Mark 2:23-28 & Luke 6:1-5).
-
The Walk of God: The Old Testament says that God stretches out the heavens and walks on the waves of the sea (Job 9:8-11). The New Testament says that Jesus walks on the waves of the sea (Matthew 14:22-34, Mark 6:45-53 & John 6:16-21).
-
The Recipient of Prayer: The Old Testament says that the Jewish people call on the name of the LORD in prayer and worship (Genesis 4:25-26, 12:8, 13:3-4, 21:33, Psalm 99:6-7, 116:1-4, 116:13, 116:17 & Joel 2:32). The New Testament says that Christians call on the name of Jesus in prayer and worship (John 14:13-14, Acts 9:1-22, Romans 10:9-13 & 1 Corinthians 1:1-3).
-
The First & Last: The Old Testament says that God is the First and Last (Isaiah 41:4, 44:6 & 48:12-13). The New Testament says that Jesus is the First and Last (Revelation 1:17-18, 2:8 & 22:12-13).
-
The Almighty Creator: The Old Testament says that God is the Almighty Creator (Genesis 1:1, Exodus 20:8-11, Psalm 102:23-28 & Isaiah 48:12-13). The New Testament says that Jesus is the Almighty Creator (John 1:1-3, 1:10, 1 Corinthians 8:4-6, Colossians 1:15-17, Hebrews 1:1-3 & 1:10-12).
-
The Jewish Shema: The Old Testament says that Jehovah is the One God of the Jewish Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-5). The New Testament says that God the Father and the Lord Jesus are the One God of the Jewish Shema (1 Corinthians 8:4-6).
In summary, Jesus is God (John 1:1-3, 1:18, Acts 20:28, Romans 9:1-5 & 1 John 5:20) according to the New Testament.

On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. (11) For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Exodus 31:12-17
(12) Then the LORD said to Moses, (13) “Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy. (14) Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people. (15) For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death. (16) The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. (17) It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’”
Leviticus 23:1-3
(1) The LORD said to Moses, (2) “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘These are my appointed festivals, the appointed festivals of the LORD, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies. (3) There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a sabbath to the LORD.
Matthew 12:1-8
(1) At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. (2) When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”
(3) He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? (4) He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread - which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. (5) Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent? (6) I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. (7) If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent. (8) For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
Mark 2:23-28
(23) One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. (24) The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

(27) Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. (28) So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
Luke 6:1-5
(1) One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels. (2) Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

(4) He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” (5) Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

(22) Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. (23) After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, (24) and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
(25) Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. (26) When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
(27) But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
(28) “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
(29) “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. (30) But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
(31) Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, (49) but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, (50) because they all saw him and were terrified.
Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” (51) Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, (52) for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
(53) When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.
John 6:16-21
(16) When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, (17) where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. (20) But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” (21) Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.

Acts 9:1-22
(1) Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest (2) and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. (3) As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. (4) He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
(5) “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.
“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. (6) “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
(7) The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. (8) Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. (9) For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.
(10) In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!”
“Yes, Lord,” he answered.
(11) The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. (12) In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”
(13) “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. (14) And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”
(15) But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. (16) I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”
(17) Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord - Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here - has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” (18) Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, (19) and after taking some food, he regained his strength.
Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. (20) At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. (21) All those who heard him were astonished and asked, “Isn’t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?” (22) Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah.
Romans 10:9-13
(9) If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (10) For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. (11) As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” (12) For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile - the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, (13) for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
