Question: What are some of the odd things that Muhammad believed about Satan?

Overview

The following considerations emerge when Muhammad’s beliefs about Satan are studied. 

 

1. According to Sahih al-Bukhari (3295), Muhammad said that Satan stays in the upper part of the human nose every night and needs to be flushed out. This is why Muslims snort water after sleeping.

 

2. According to Sahih al-Bukhari (608), Muhammad taught that Satan loudly passes wind to avoid hearing the call to prayer as he runs away.

 

3. According to Sahih al-Bukhari (1144), Muhammad attributed the cause of a man sleeping through his morning prayer to Satan urinating in the man’s ears.

 

In summary, Muhammad believed that Satan can indwell multiple human noses simultaneously, pass wind loudly and urinate in human ears to prevent hearing. These references should be cited and an explanation provided when Muslims say that Islam is logically superior to Christianity.

Sahih al-Bukhari, 608

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "When the Adhan is pronounced Satan takes to his heels and passes wind with noise during his flight in order not to hear the Adhan. When the Adhan is completed he comes back and again takes to his heels when the Iqama is pronounced and after its completion he returns again till he whispers into the heart of the person (to divert his attention from his prayer) and makes him remember things which he does not recall to his mind before the prayer and that causes him to forget how much he has prayed."

 

Sahih al-Bukhari, 1144

 

Narrated `Abdullah: A person was mentioned before the Prophet and he was told that he had kept on sleeping till morning and had not got up for the prayer. The Prophet said, "Satan urinated in his ears."

 

Sahih al-Bukhari, 3295

 

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "If anyone of you rouses from sleep and performs the ablution, he should wash his nose by putting water in it and then blowing it out thrice, because Satan has stayed in the upper part of his nose all the night."
